The Russian Prepositional Case: Talking About Places

Use it after a small set of prepositions to say where something is and what you are talking about.

If you want to say where you are or what you are talking about, the prepositional case will appear early and often: в Москве, на работе, о фильме. It is friendlier than its name. The case occurs after a small group of prepositions, so you rarely have to identify it in the wild without a signpost.

Location after в and на

В Москве means in Moscow; на работе means at work. The prepositional describes location, while accusative forms after the same prepositions often describe destination. That contrast is more useful than memorising a list in isolation.

Topics after о

О means about and triggers the prepositional: говорить о книге, to talk about a book. Before some vowel combinations it appears as об or обо. The noun ending still carries the case information.

A few forms refuse the simple pattern

Most masculine and neuter nouns use е, and many feminine nouns in а change to е. A small set of common masculine location expressions use stressed у, such as в лесу, in the forest. Learn those as frequent chunks rather than treating them as a broken rule.

Put it into a tiny conversation

Give в Санкт-Петербурге a line before it and a line after it. Who is speaking, what do they need, and what is the shortest natural reply? Work на вокзале into a second version with a different person or place. Read the exchange aloud twice, then cover it and keep only the meaning in your head. If the grammar changes when you replace a noun, note the complete new phrase—not just the loose ending. A ten-second exchange is enough; the point is to turn Russian prepositional case into something another person could actually answer. On the next round, shorten the dialogue rather than adding vocabulary. Natural exchanges often rely on context, and Russian does not need every English pronoun or linking verb translated. Keep one hesitation or repair line ready as well. Being able to say Повторите, пожалуйста and continue is a better sign of usable learning than delivering a perfect script that collapses after an unexpected answer.

Location is not destination

В Москве means in Moscow; в Москву means to Moscow. На работе is at work; на работу is to work. The preposition stays while the case changes, which is why translating в as simply in is unreliable. Learn stationary and movement phrases as pairs and say them with verbs: живу в, еду в; нахожусь на, иду на.

Talking about something

After о or об, the case marks a topic: о книге, о России, об этом. Many masculine and neuter nouns use -е, while many feminine -а nouns change to -е. A small group has special -у forms in fixed location phrases, such as в лесу and на мосту. Notice them, use them, and postpone the urge to make the exception list longer.

What is the difference between в Москве and в Москву? The first is location; the second is destination.

Does о change before a vowel? It often becomes об, as in об этом, to make pronunciation easier.
