You are at a station, the departure board has changed, and the answer to your careful question arrives at normal speed. This is where travel Russian succeeds or fails. The winning phrase is often not the original question but the recovery line: Повторите, пожалуйста. Можно помедленнее? James would learn those before a poetic way to describe Red Square.
Здравствуйте is the safe formal hello; привет is for casual situations. Add спасибо, пожалуйста, извините and до свидания and you can enter and leave almost any exchange politely. Russian politeness often depends as much on tone and the formal вы as on extra words.
Я не понимаю means I do not understand. Повторите, пожалуйста asks someone to repeat. Можно помедленнее? asks for a slower version. These rescue lines matter more than another twenty nouns because they turn a breakdown into more comprehensible input.
Где находится…? asks where something is. Мне нужен… or мне нужна… means I need, with the ending matching the noun. Я хотел бы… is a polite I would like. Learn the frame, then swap in station, hotel, pharmacy, water or a ticket.
Read Здравствуйте. and Привет! aloud, then close the page. After one minute, recover the Russian, the meaning and the reason each form looks as it does. If one part fails, reopen only long enough to correct it; do not restart from the beginning. Add one personal example and return to all three tomorrow. This short delayed recall is less satisfying than highlighting a page, but it exposes whether Russian phrases is available to you or merely recognisable when the answer is visible. Repeat the check after a normal interruption—a cup of tea, a message, a short walk—rather than staring at the same material. Retrieval after attention has moved is the useful challenge. Keep only one tally: produced cleanly, repaired after a pause, or needed the page. The middle category is progress; it shows you can find and fix the gap.

Здравствуйте, спасибо, пожалуйста and извините cover a remarkable amount of ground. Use вы with strangers and service staff unless the situation clearly becomes informal. You do not need to wrap every request in a long English-style cushion. Один билет до Казани, пожалуйста is direct and polite. Tone, greeting and пожалуйста do the social work.
If you ask Сколько это стоит?, practise hearing numbers. If you ask Где метро?, learn прямо, налево and направо. For a ticket, recognise сегодня, завтра, отправление, прибытие and платформа. A memorised question without its likely answer is a trap: it creates a conversation you cannot yet receive. Build phrases in pairs—question and probable reply.
Can I travel with only English in Russia? In some major tourist settings, perhaps, but basic Russian makes transport and everyday exchanges far easier.
Is привет polite with strangers? It is casual. Здравствуйте is the safer greeting for an unknown adult.
