Russian Numbers 1–100 with Pronunciation

Count, understand prices and tell the time—then meet the small grammar surprise after the number.

James could count to a hundred long before he could understand a price. That is normal. Number lists train sequence; real life delivers isolated numbers, case endings and reduced sounds through a speaker, a till or a station announcement. Learn the pattern, then pull numbers out of order until двадцать семь no longer needs the whole staircase from one.

Questions people actually ask

How do I practise Russian numbers? Use random prices, times and phone-number chunks rather than counting only in order.

Why does the noun change after a number? Russian has different quantity patterns after one, two-to-four and five or more.

Do Russian phone numbers use pairs? They may be spoken in grouped chunks. Practise listening to varied groupings, not one written format.

Build from reusable pieces

Learn один through десять, then the teens and the tens. Twenty is двадцать, thirty тридцать and forty сорок. Numbers such as twenty-three combine the tens and unit directly: двадцать три. Reading prices aloud gives the pattern a daily purpose.

The noun changes after the number

After one, the noun is typically singular. After two, three and four it uses a genitive-singular pattern; after five through twenty it normally uses genitive plural. The final digit often controls larger numbers, except that eleven through fourteen belong to the five-plus pattern.

Pronunciation needs stress, not transliteration

Четыре and четырнадцать look related but carry different rhythmic shapes. Listen and repeat numbers in realistic groups—room numbers, times, prices and dates—rather than chanting a perfect sequence from one to one hundred.

The system is pleasantly reusable

After twenty, Russian builds many numbers transparently: двадцать один, двадцать два, and so on. Thirty is тридцать; forty is the irregular сорок; fifty through eighty use forms built around ten; ninety is девяносто and one hundred is сто. Mark stress and say contrasts such as тринадцать and тридцать, because teens and tens are easy to confuse when audio is quick.

Numbers drag nouns into the conversation

Один билет uses a singular form; два билета uses the genitive singular pattern; пять билетов uses genitive plural. Prices add rubль forms: один рубль, два рубля, пять рублей. Do not postpone speaking until you can explain every ending. Memorise several whole price and ticket examples, then let the grammar emerge from repetitions.

Teach it back in sixty seconds

Imagine a friend has asked why один works. Explain it without technical padding, then compare it with два. Your explanation should contain the meaning, the one detail that changes and a fresh Russian example. If you cannot explain the difference, return to the relevant paragraph rather than memorising a definition. Teaching back is a good check for Russian numbers because it reveals the gap between knowing a label and being able to choose the form inside a sentence. Record the explanation and listen for vague phrases such as it just changes. Replace each with the actual job: destination, recipient, completed result, formal address or whatever the example shows. Then cut the explanation to thirty seconds without losing the Russian. Clear teaching is not proof of perfect speech, but muddled teaching reliably exposes a muddled distinction.

Ask a random-number generator for ten values and say each without climbing from one. Then attach a ticket, minute or ruble and make the grammar work. See what is coming and get a launch update.
