Your first Montenegrin exchange
Published and checked 1 October 2026
For a simple informal exchange, say: Zdravo. — Zdravo. Kako si? — Dobro sam, hvala. A ti? It means: “Hello. — Hello. How are you? — I’m well, thank you. And you?”

Why the exchange works
| Expression | What it does | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Zdravo | A neutral everyday “hello”. | Use dobar dan when you want a more formal “good day”. |
| Kako si? | Literally “How are you?” to one person informally. | Use Kako ste? formally or for several people. |
| Dobro sam | “I am well.” Sam is the first-person present form of “to be”. | The pronoun ja is normally unnecessary because sam already marks “I”. |
| hvala | “Thank you.” | Add A ti? (“And you?”) to return the question informally. |
