French for Train Travel: Tickets, Platforms and Delays
Ask for un billet pour Lyon when buying a ticket to Lyon. Un aller simple is a one-way trip and un aller-retour is a return. To find the platform or track, listen for voie, as in voie quatre. If there is a delay, ask Le train a combien de minutes de retard ?

At the ticket counter
Say Un aller simple pour Lyon, s’il vous plaît and add the day or departure time. Pour aujourd’hui means for today. Ask C’est direct ? if you want to know whether you will need to change. Une correspondance is a connection.
Read the departure board
Départ is departure and arrivée is arrival. The word voie typically gives the track number, while quai means the platform. If a train is annoncé avec dix minutes de retard, it is running ten minutes late. Check the board again close to departure because the track can change.
Try it
