French Passé Composé: Talking About What Happened

The passé composé uses a form of avoir or être plus a past participle. Use it for past events such as J’ai réservé une chambre or Elle est arrivée à midi. Most verbs use avoir. Learn a few common être verbs separately and listen for the auxiliary in spoken French.

Examples

FrenchEnglish
J’ai acheté un billet.I bought a ticket.
Nous avons pris le métro. We took the metro.
Elles sont arrivées à midi. They arrived at noon.

Start with avoir

Regular -er verbs usually form the past participle with -é: réserver becomes réservé. Useful irregular forms include fait from faire and pris from prendre. The subject changes the auxiliary: j’ai réservé, nous avons réservé. For a basic sentence like these, the participle stays the same.

Common verbs with être

Aller and arriver use être in this construction. In these examples, the participle agrees with the subject: Il est arrivé, elle est arrivée, elles sont arrivées. Learn the whole form with the subject and avoid treating every verb of movement as an être verb.

Try it

Tell someone you booked a room and that Léa arrived at six.
