Use kein to negate many noun phrases that would otherwise have ein or no article: Ich habe kein Auto. Use nicht to negate verbs, adjectives, definite phrases or particular sentence elements: Das Auto ist nicht neu. Kein changes its ending with gender, number and case. Nicht’s position depends on what you are negating, so learn it in complete sentences.

English can say “I don’t have a car” and “the car isn’t new”. German uses different tools for the noun and the description. Learn the contrast before worrying about every possible position of nicht.
A basic decision table
Positive sentence
Negative sentence
Why
Ich habe ein Auto.
Ich habe kein Auto.
No car; kein replaces ein.
Ich habe Zeit.
Ich habe keine Zeit.
No time; kein negates the articleless noun phrase.
Das Auto ist neu.
Das Auto ist nicht neu.
Not new; nicht negates the description.
Ich kaufe das Auto.
Ich kaufe das Auto nicht.
Not buying the specified car.
Kein has endings
Kein behaves like an article, a word that specifies a noun. In nominative singular: kein Hund, keine Frage, kein Buch. In the masculine accusative: Ich habe keinen Hund — I have no dog. Feminine keine Frage and neuter kein Buch keep those forms in the accusative.
The plural nominative and accusative is keine: Ich habe keine Fragen — I have no questions. Dative changes further: mit keinem Auto, mit keiner Tasche. Learn the case pattern alongside the ordinary article pattern.
Nicht can negate a description or action
Ich bin nicht müde means I’m not tired. Sie kommt heute nicht means She isn’t coming today. With a second verb part, nicht often precedes it: Ich kann heute nicht kommen — I can’t come today; Ich habe nicht gearbeitet — I didn’t work.
“Put nicht at the very end” works for some simple sentences and fails for others. The clause structure and the element being negated matter. Learn ordinary full examples rather than moving nicht around on intuition from English.
Negating one detail
Nicht heute, sondern morgen means Not today, but tomorrow. Ich trinke nicht den Kaffee, sondern den Tee means I’m not drinking the coffee, but the tea. Nicht sits before the contrasted element; sondern introduces the correction.
Kein can also appear in a correction: Das ist kein Kaffee, sondern Tee — That isn’t coffee, but tea. The choice still depends on the noun phrase, not merely on whether the sentence contains a contrast.
Answer a question, then say the sentence
Hast du ein Auto? — Nein, ich habe kein Auto. Do you have a car? — No, I don’t have a car.
Bist du müde? — Nein, ich bin nicht müde. Are you tired? — No, I’m not tired.
Nein answers no; kein and nicht build the negative statement. They are related jobs, not interchangeable words.
Complete Ich habe ___ Zeit and Das ist ___ teuer. Answers: keine and nicht. Time is the noun you lack; expensive is the description you reject.
