German False Friends: Bekommen, Gift and Other Misleading Familiar Words
German false friends resemble English words but have different meanings. Bekommen means receive, not become; Gift means poison, not a present; aktuell means current, not actual. Learn the correct German meaning together with the word you intended to use. Similarity is a useful clue for reading, but it should never replace checking context and a reliable dictionary.

Related languages give you shortcuts and the occasional trap. A word looks so familiar that you stop checking it. German Gift is a memorable reason to continue checking.

Translations can vary with context. An English “chef” who heads a kitchen is a Küchenchef; that does not make ordinary der Chef the universal word for a cook. Likewise, Germany’s Gymnasium is an educational institution with a particular role, not an exact synonym for every English secondary school.
Receive and become
Ich bekomme eine Nachricht — I receive a message. Ich werde müde — I’m becoming tired. Bekommen and werden do different jobs. If you mean a change of state, check werden rather than borrowing the spelling of become.
Build a contrast you can reuse: Ich bekomme Hilfe — I get help; Es wird einfacher — It’s becoming easier. The first says something arrives. The second says something changes.
Perhaps is not eventually
Ich komme eventuell morgen means I may come tomorrow. It leaves the visit uncertain. It does not mean that you will inevitably arrive after enough time has passed.
For “eventually I understood it”, a possible translation is Schließlich habe ich es verstanden. For “we’ll do it eventually”, irgendwann may fit the intended indefinite future. Choose the German expression for the meaning of the whole sentence.
Lookalikes are not all enemies
German and English share many related words. Hand, Winter and Haus are helpful to recognise. The sensible response is to test a guess, not discard every resemblance. Check the article, pronunciation and ordinary use as well as the meaning.
Keep a small personal list when a word surprises you. Add a sentence for the German meaning and a second line for the English meaning you confused it with. Two clear examples are easier to retrieve than a warning that merely says “be careful”.
Practice before the mistake becomes a habit
Translate I receive a present: Ich bekomme ein Geschenk. Translate The news is current: Die Nachricht ist aktuell. Translate Perhaps I’ll come tomorrow: Eventuell komme ich morgen.
Now cover the answers and explain why Gift, actual and eventually would send you in the wrong direction. Explaining one contrast in plain English is a useful check that you have learned the meaning rather than just another spelling.
